RTDNA/Syracuse: TV News Salaries Inched Up 1.1% In 2021

One year after a large increase in salaries, the latest RTDNA/Newhouse School at Syracuse University Survey found local television news salaries rose just 1.1% in 2021. That’s down sharply from the 3.5% growth in 2020. Adjusted for inflation, salaries actually fell 5.9% in terms of real wages. More than 85% of TV news directors said they found it harder to recruit people this past year.

Local TV News Salaries Edge Up

After falling in 2019 for the first time in seven years, local TV news salaries made gains in 2020. Despite pandemic-related pay cuts, local television news salaries, on average, increased by 3.5%, or 2.1% after accounting for inflation. This was the largest increase in salaries since 2016.
