Most Americans followed the Lahaina fire on Maui, considered the world’s deadliest wildfire on record, on national news. But for KHON, it was, and still is, very much a local story.
Cable operator Hawaiian Telcom has lobbed fresh accusations against broadcaster Nexstar Media Group over its ongoing carriage dispute involving several TV channels. On Monday, attorneys representing Hawaiian Telcom said it had reached an “agreement in principle” with Nexstar to return KHON (Fox and CW), KHII (MNT) and NewsNation to its cable TV platform, but the deal ultimately fell apart after Nexstar sprang a number of demands on the telecom at the last minute.
KITV, KGMB, KHON, KHNL, KHII and KIKU are now broadcasting with ATSC 3.0 technology.

Technical difficulties knocked some of the early innings of the World Series’ Game 5 off the air for many Hawaii TV viewers. “The problem was not our fault,” said Kristina Lockwood, GM of KHON, the Honolulu Fox affiliate. “Apparently the Time Warner fiber connection at Queen Street was lost. Time Warner fixed it immediately.”
