Judge’s Action May Delay WAGT Sale

A judge’s action Fri­­day might delay Schurz Commu­nications from selling NBC affiliate WAGT Augusta, Ga., to Gray Television Group, which operates the market’s CBS affiliate WRDW. The conflict between Media General and its ABC affil WJBF and the owners of the two other stations is complicated by the involvement of federal agencies and spectrum usage rights, but it boils down to a contract dispute, Judge Michael N. Annis said.

CBS And Showtime Hit With $8.6M Lawsuit

While not named as defendants, Les Moonves and CAA have been dragged into the ring in a legal dust-up over the Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather battle of last spring. Actor Gabriel Rueda has sued CBS, Showtime, Pacquiao and his trainer/coach Freddie Roach in a multi-claim breach of contract complaint filed in L.A. Superior Court on Wednesday. Rueda, who also goes by Gabriel Salvador, says he is owed more $8.6 million for making introductions for the CBS boss that lead to the record-breaking May 2, 2015, Fight Of the Century.

FremantleMedia Sued Over Buzzr Name

A New York Internet media company is crying foul over FremantleMedia North America’s use of the name Buzzr for its TV and digital game-show network. Codename Enterprises, which operates Tumblr-like website Buzzr.com, filed a lawsuit against FremantleMedia alleging trademark infringement, false advertising, trademark dilution and unfair competition.

Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone will be evaluated Friday by a doctor hired by his ex-girlfriend in a legal brawl over who should have the power to make health care decisions for him.

Broadcasters: No Cable License For FilmOn

Online video distributor FilmOn is not entitled to a compulsory cable license that would enable it to stream TV programs, a coalition of TV broadcasters argues in new court papers. The broadcasters want the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse a decision issued last year by U.S. District Court Judge George Wu in Los Angeles, who said that FilmOn should be considered a “cable system,” and therefore entitled to a cable license.

Byron Allen Sues FCC, Charter For $10B

Less than a month after Byron Allen got AT&T and DirecTV carriage deals after charging them with racial discrimination in a $10 billion lawsuit, he’s got some new targets. On Wednesday, both the FCC and Charter Communications were sued for $10 billion in federal court by Allan’s Entertainment Studios and the National Association of African American-Owned Media for “racial discrimination in contracting for television channel carriage.”

Doctor To Examine Redstone In Dispute

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge has ruled to allow a medical examination of Viacom and CBS chairman Sumner Redstone. In a hearing Friday, a judge did not allow a request by Redstone’s ex, Manuela Herzer, to have the 92-year-old executive deposed. But the judge did rule to allow for Redstone to be examined for one hour by Herzer’s medical expert.

Cowan said Monday that Viacom and CBS executive Sumner Redstone does not have to submit to a medical examination in a suit filed by the 92-year-old media mogul’s former girlfriend seeking to take control of his health decisions. The judge said Viacom’s CEO, Philippe Dauman, may need to be deposed about his recent interactions with Redstone, but if he gives testimony it should be restricted to details about medical issues.
