Hot Off Emmy, Modern Family Starts Strong
ABC’s top-rated network show started strong with a 1.5 houshold rating, becoming the second-highest rated off-network sitcom to debut in the past five years, trailing only the 2011 debut of Warner Bros. The Big Bang Theory.

Twentieth Television threw a Modern Family upfront party in New York City on Monday. Among those on hand were the show’s star Sofia Vergara alongside Chase Carey, deputy chairman, president-COO, News Corp. (center) and Jack Abernethy, CEO, Fox Television Stations. Cleared in more than 97% of the U.S., the hit comedy premieres in broadcast syndication on the Fox Television Stations and on cable’s USA Network this September.
Others taking home trophies include Portlandia, The Simpsons, Mad Men, Modern Family, Hatfields and McCoys, Game Change, The Tony Awards, The Young & the Restless, Frontline and Nova.
Both Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin took home awards for the NBC sitcom that’s in its last season. But even on its way out, 30 Rock couldn’t beat Modern Family, which won the ensemble comedy honor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for the third year in a row.

A 20th Century Fox spokesman confirmed Friday evening that the deals had been reached and that shooting on the ABC series’ fourth season will begin Monday. The deals cover stars Sofia Vergara, Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
The suit, filed Tuesday by series stars Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell, argues that their contracts with 20th Century Fox Television violate a California law prohibiting personal service contracts from extending for more than seven years.
Sources say that the ensemble cast has rejected a Monday offer from producer 20th Century Fox Television, requiring the cancellation of today’s scheduled table read.

Even With A Rerun, ‘Modern Family’ Is Tops
How hot is Modern Family this season? Even a rerun can finish as the night’s top show, albeit against limited competition on the other networks. On a night littered with repeats, ABC’s mostly original lineup saw gains, but it was a repeat of Family‘s instant-classic Halloween episode from last year that led the way. Family averaged a 4.4 adults 18-49 rating at 9 p.m., its best-ever number for a repeat.
Modern Family received a 28% boost from DVR viewing in the season premiere week ratings. That’s according to an analysis of live-plus-same day versus live-plus-three-day ratings information. CSI, Law & Order: SVU and Parenthood were among the other shows that scored large percentage gains from delayed viewing.
Reality competition shows look close to the saturation point, while comedy is becoming more popular, as the new broadcast season unfurls.
