As broadcasters’ comfort level in doing things over IP networks has risen, more and more vendors are offering ATSC 3.0-compatible products that include such features as immersive sound and object-based audio. At the same time, wireless microphone vendors and their customers are tackling the present-day challenge of moving off of the 600 MHz UHF spectrum. Interoperability got a big boost in December 2017 with the publication of SMPTE’s 2110 suite of standards for handling professional media over managed IP networks. Equipment manufacturers and software developers are moving forward quickly to build ST 2110-compliant products. At April’s NAB Show, attendees are certain to see plenty of ST 2110 products introduced, and hear lots of discussions about how to migrate to IP and how best to work in hybrid SDI-IP environments in the meantime.
