WNYW New York Mines Its Archives To Turn Cold Cases Into Podcasts
A trip to WNYW’s Tape Room, where the station keeps its archives, sparked an idea for reporter Dan Bowens. In the Tape Room, Bowens found old reports of crimes from the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area that have remained unsolved to this day. Bowens has produced 13 audio-only podcasts so far. Of those, four were made into TV stories and then those four were stitched together for a 22-minute special called The Tape Room.
Nielsen says its branded content testing suite has the ability to evaluate the advertising effectiveness of brand sponsorships in podcasts, focusing on three key areas.

BuzzFeed News is closing down its in-house podcast production team. “We’ve decided to move to a production model that is more like our TV projects — that is, treating shows as individual projects, with teams brought on as needed,” Shani Hilton, VP of news and programming, said in a memo to staff obtained by TheWrap. “We’ve found a lot of success with this approach to our projects on Netflix, Facebook and Twitter, and we hope to replicate that with audio.”
In recent weeks, we’ve written about a number of legal issues that need to be considered in connection with podcasting. Another issue is sponsorship identification. Broadcasters are familiar with the FCC requirements for the identification of those who provide something of value to a station in exchange for any on-air content.
