Remember that 1990s-set spinoff from The Goldbergs that ABC ordered to pilot last year? The network totally said Monday that the pilot, which was not picked up to series, will air at 8 p.m. on Jan. 24 as a regular episode of the fifth-year comedy.
CBS said Monday that Young Sheldon will air this coming season. The comedy is set during the childhood of Jim Parsons’ character on the original series. The precocious 9-year-old Sheldon is living with his family in Texas and attending high school.
Yara Shahidi, who plays the show’s oldest daughter, would topline the potential backdoor pilot from series creator Kenya Barris and former showrunner Larry Wilmore.
Not even a superhero or princess might be able to save ESPN. Even though Disney continues to churn out one big movie hit after another — Marvel’s Doctor Strange and the animated Moana are the latest blockbusters — investors are still worried about the declining fortunes at the House of Mouse’s sports network.
Content distribution giant Disney is being held back from its full potential by ESPN and may consider spinning off the sports broadcast network, Liberty Media Chairman John Malone told CNBC on Thursday. “If I had to guess, what you will see is a split of Disney with ESPN spun off and, probably, ESPN could be owned and protected by a distributor in the U.S.,” Malone said.
A Big Bang Theory spinoff series based around a young Sheldon Cooper is in the early stages of development, Jim Parsons, who plays the idiosyncratic genius on the megahit CBS sitcom, is signed on to executive produce along with executive producers Chuck Lorre and Steve Molaro, with Molaro writing the script.
The in-the-works Good Wife spinoff — starring Christine Baranski (Diane) and Cush Jumbo (Lucca) — will launch earlier than expected — this February — on CBS, before moving exclusively to CBS All Access.
‘Empire’ Producers Talking About A Spin-Off
The Fox hit’s producers say there’s lots of discussion about how the lead characters might fare in another part of the universe. First, there’s room for a crossover between Empire and Lee Daniels’ other musical show, Star, and possibly even more, including spinoffs.
Sources say CBS is in final negotiations to set up a spinoff of The Good Wife focusing on Christine Baranski’s Diane Lockhart character that would air on CBS All Access. Actress Cush Jumbo, who joined the Good Wife cast in the show’s seventh and final season, is also expected to star in the spinoff. Sources cautioned that the deal is still in negotiations for a straight-to-series order and may not come to fruition.
More are in the works for this fall, including another offshoot of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The upsides: They have a proven audience and they’re low-risk.
