Fubo Cuts Second Quarter Loss As ARPU Increases

Fubo reduced its second quarter loss as revenue per subscriber increased. Fubo’s second quarter loss shrunk to $49.9 million, or 17 cents a share, from $116.1 million, or 63 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 41% to $312.7 million. Fubo said it had 1.167 million North American subscribers, up 23% from a year ago, but down from 1.285 million at the end of the first quarter. Average revenue per subscriber rose 13% to $81.62, cutting its domestic loss to $41 million.

The streamers’ U.K. revenues increased by more than 20% last year despite subscriber numbers remaining at a virtual standstill, according to Ofcom’s latest Media Nations report. The combined turnover of the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ hit nearly £3.3 billion ($4.2 billion) in the nation, rising by 21.5% on the prior year and having now doubled over the past three years.

Fubo Challenges Reclassification Of Streaming Services Under MVPD Term

Executives with sports-centric streaming service Fubo met with officials at the FCC last week to express concern over a proposal to reclassify streaming cable TV replacements in a way that would require them to fundamentally change certain aspects of their business. Specifically, the proposal concerns whether to group virtual MVPD streaming services like Fubo as multichannel video programming distributors, or MVPDs, in the same ilk as traditional cable and satellite TV services like Comcast’s Xfinity, Charter’s Spectrum, Dish and DirecTV.
