The Capitol insurrection is but one example of a story that might not have seemed as much a surprise if more journalists were attuned to communities outside of the power centers, veteran NBC newsman Tom Brokaw says. Television news is “much, much too wedded to the East Coast and West Coast only” and needs to expand its presence across the country.

Tom Brokaw, 80, author of The Greatest Generation, was NBC’s lead anchor at Nightly News and for big events for more than 20 years before giving way to Brian Williams in 2004. He was a White House correspondent during Richard Nixon’s presidency, and began co-hosting Today in 1976. He started hosting Nightly News in 1983.

Legendary NBC broadcaster Tom Brokaw blasted President Trump’s criticism of the news media on Thursday, firing back after Trump questioned at a rally earlier this week whether members of the press liked the country.
NBC newsman Tom Brokaw, longtime anchor at NBC’s Nightly News before stepping down in 2004, accepted an award from Syracuse University on Tuesday. Brokaw says the amount of false stories in the news ecosystem doesn’t get enough attention. He challenged fellow journalists to write more about the scourge of “fake news.”

John Dingell, the longest-serving member of Congress.

The Mayo Clinic discovered last summer that Brokaw has multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting blood cells in the bone marrow, NBC News said. His doctors are optimistic about his treatment and encouraged by his progress since the August diagnosis, the network division said. “With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come,” Brokaw said.
Tom Brokaw is in good shape following a bit of a disconcerting morning for the veteran anchor. In Charlotte, N.C., for the Democratic National Convention, the 72-year-old newsman was due to appear on MSNBC’s Morning Joe when he felt light-headed and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. “After medical evaluation and a round of tests, Tom was pronounced in great health and has been discharged,” said NBC News President Steve Capus.
