More and more TV stations and other news producers are turning to Facebook’s Live and Instant Articles features to deliver their content directly on Facebook’s platform and tap into its huge mobile audience. However, that means ceding a lot of control to Facebook, starting with letting original content live natively on its platform. And it remains to be seen how much ad money publishers will get from the arrangement.
NBC-owned WCAU Philadelphia (DMA 4) today announced that Brandon Hudson will join the station as a reporter starting March 28. Hudson is a morning reporter and fill-in sports anchor at WPXI Pittsburgh. Hudson worked at several stations in Alabama before heading north to Pittsburgh. He is a graduate of Florida State University.

The pope is about to make a historic visit to the U.S., with a stop off in Philadelphia. But, the TV coverage might be a bit lacking. The union representing the roughly 75 photographers and technicians at KYW overwhelmingly voted Tuesday to strike over stalled contract negotiations. The news comes a day after roughly 65 photographers and technicians at WCAU notified station management that they are exercising their right to terminate a collective bargaining agreement in 10 days and set a Sept. 21 strike date.

Today’s launch of Noticiero Telemundo 62, on Philadelphia Telemundo affiliate WWSI, gives the market its first local, Spanish-language news program coproduced by an English-language network affiliate, NBC O&O WCAU.

As part of parent NBC’s push to beef up news at its owned stations, its WCAU Philadelphia has upped its game. With new people and tools, including SkyForce 10, a state-of-the-art Bell helicopter with four HD cameras, there’s a new approach to reporting news, one that involves expanding the station’s geographical coverage, heightening investigative and enterprise work and putting news in better context. “A year ago we were probably more reactionary — something would happen and we would react. And now we are a little more thoughtful in our process, more balanced, a lot more measured,” says News Director Anzio Williams.
