For the past few months, Charter Communications’ Spectrum, one of the nation’s biggest cable providers, has been shipping new customers a device, Xumo, that lets them stream live TV through an app, alongside streaming mainstays such as Netflix, Disney+ and Max. You can still get a traditional cable box instead, but only if you request it. Charter’s emphasis on Xumo is part of a strategy to bring streaming and live TV together in one package. The company wants Xumo to become a superstore for streaming apps and take a cut along the way.

Comcast and Charter Communications have settled on Xumo as the name of their streaming platform joint venture, as the two biggest U.S. cable operators look to take on the likes of Roku, Amazon, Apple and Google in the space.
Ad-supported streaming platform Xumo said it launched two channels in time for trick or treat season. The Halloween Horror channel will feature mostly AVOD-exclusive movies, including turtles such as The Gravedigger, Those Who Walk Away, Hideout, While We Sleep, and Homebound.
In a move that seems somewhat counterintuitive, Xumo, an ad-supported streaming service owned by Comcast, will begin offering some movies completely ad-free. Kicking off in October through December 2021, the company will showcase a completely ad-free movie each week across all of its owned and operated properties. The company said the move is an extension of a pilot program it ran last August with Xumo viewers on Comcast Xfinity X1 devices.
