‘Bachelor,’ ‘AGT: Champions’ Hit Season Highs

The Bachelor and America’s Got Talent: The Champions both improved in Monday’s ratings, setting new season highs in viewers and tying their best adults 18-49 ratings of the season. The Bachelor — which featured a contestant opening up about being a sexual assault survivor — scored a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, matching its season high from two weeks ago. AGT: The Champions, meanwhile, drew a 1.8 in the demo, tying the season high set with its premiere, and 10.38 million viewers, a season high.

James Brown Gets Ready For Super Bowl Spotlight

On Sunday, Brown, 67, will host the Super Bowl pregame show for the ninth time, between his current employer, CBS, and his former employer, Fox. For years he has served as the buttoned-up straight man on fall Sundays — on Fox he was opposite Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long; at CBS, it’s Boomer Esiason and Bill Cowher. He’s one of the most ubiquitous presences in sports television — he’s hosted the Super Bowl pregame show more than anyone other than Brent Musburger — and also one of its longest tenured.

‘Rent’ Is Fox’s Lowest-Rated Musical

Fox’s staging of Rent underperformed Sunday night, drawing ratings at the bottom of the list of TV musicals aired in recent years. Sunday’s performance — which consisted largely of taped footage from Saturday’s dress rehearsal after star Brennin Hunt broke his foot near the end of the run-through — posted a 1.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 3.42 million viewers over its three-hour running time. Those are the smallest numbers for any of the four musicals Fox has aired since 2016.

JESSELL AT LARGE

Jessell | Daytime TV’s Not-So-Secret Shame

I look at broadcast TV’s schedules and I see a lot of junk cluttering up the grids. I mean lousy shows that may make money, but that drag down the overall broadcast day and make the station and the industry looked seedy and desperate. Stations need to clear out the junk and make room for other programs that draw viewers and make money without sacrificing respectability, and they can start with NBCU’s unholy trinity of Springer, Maury and Wilkos.

Netflix Plays Peekaboo With Its Ratings

Netflix has publicly revealed some fuzzy performance figures for a handful of projects. But these are the exceptions. Viewership for Netflix’s hundreds of other original series and movies remains a corporate secret. As Netflix continues to grow, this practice has become increasingly irksome to other studios as well as talent agencies, some of which feel that Netflix’s lack of transparency gives it an unfair competitive advantage.
