Google, McClatchy Collaborating On Local News

NEW YORK (AP) — There’s a new experiment to try and boost the struggling local news industry.

Google and the McClatchy publishing company said Tuesday they will launch digital-only newsrooms to provide information to three U.S. communities that are currently news “deserts.”

McClatchy will launch and run the news operations; Google will provide seed money but not be involved in the journalism.

The companies haven’t named the communities where they will be located. More than 1,800 newspapers have closed in the United States over the past 15 years, most in small cities and towns.
