WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Judy, Tamron, Drew Off To Solid Starts

In the syndication season’s first week, Judge Judy jumped 6% from the prior venue to an eight-week high 5.7; Tamron Hall kicked off its second season with a 33% increase to a nine-week high 0.8; and rookie Drew Barrymore Show debuted with a 0.7, the third-highest pure talk show premiere since 2017.

Judge Judy is not going quietly. Syndication’s biggest star took the wraps off her 25th and final season in the session ending Sept. 20 and blew away all other shows like candles on a birthday cake.

The popular jurist jumped 6% from the prior venue to an eight-week high 5.7 live-plus-same-day national  rating, easily topping the Nielsen chart. That was triple the rating of the next highest daytime program.

Among talk shows, Tamron Hall was hottest, kicking off its second season with a 33% increase to a nine-week high 0.8. Hall’s opener made worldwide headlines with a widely praised exclusive Andrew Gillum interview.

Live with Kelly and Ryan raced into sole possession of first place in the category, holding 100% of its big premiere week audience, scoring a 1.9.

Dr. Phil was right behind, even though it dipped 5% to a 1.8.

Further down in the yak pack was the embattled Ellen DeGeneres Show, which slipped 11% to a new series low 0.8, 56% below its comparable week one year earlier. The first national ratings for Ellen’s new season, which didn’t begin until Sept. 21, will not appear until next week. However, the show’s premiere week in the 56 metered markets was down 25% from its year-ago time periods.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

The debut week of the Drew Barrymore Show was a very respectable 0.7, the third-highest pure talk show premiere since 2017. That was behind only the highly rated pre-pandemic openers of Kelly Clarkson and Tamron Hall.

Of course, the coronavirus and subsequent production curtailments have sharply reduced TV ratings across the board, making the Barrymore achievement all the more impressive. In addition, Drew’s competitive score was accomplished despite its losing primary run 19 times in the country’s largest markets due mainly to U.S. Open golf and breaking news coverage.

In prime access time periods, the top three magazines moved up in the pre-Emmy Awards week. Entertainment Tonight and Inside Edition each grew 5% to a 2.2, while Access Hollywood climbed 13% to a 0.9.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.9, +13% from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (0.7, unchanged)
  • Maury (0.5, unchanged)
  • Tamron Hall (0.4, +33%), tied with Kelly Clarkson (0.4, +33%) and Steve Wilkos (0.4, unchanged)
  • Drew Barrymore (0.3, NA), tied with Ellen DeGeneres (0.3, -25%), Rachael Ray (0.3, unchanged) and Wendy Williams (0.3, unchanged)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA means not applicable.
