Little Celebrating By Syndies In July 4 Week
Syndication’s traditional July 4 Nielsen nosedive was made even worse this year by preemptions and competition from the eagerly anticipated Women’s World Cup semifinals in the holiday session ending July 7.
For example, Big Bang Theory, the most popular sitcom on the planet by a mile, recorded its lowest weekly number ever, slipping 10% from the previous frame to a 3.6 live-plus-same-day national rating, according to Nielsen.
On the other hand, one of the very few strips to buck the downtrend was true crime mainstay Dateline, which managed to climb 9% to a 1.2. In fact, the weekly version of Dateline defied gravity with a 29% surge to a category-leading 3.1.
But most programs were unable to gain.
Among the games, the top four shows were all down, with three hitting new season lows. Leader Family Feud, the only one of the four not at a new season low, slipped 7% to a 5.7. Jeopardy, in its fourth full week without star attraction James Holzhauer, lost 9% to a 5.1. Wheel of Fortune slid 10% to a 4.7, and Who Wants To Be a Millionaire depreciated 7% to a 1.4.
In early fringe and prior dayparts, which were penalized the most by soccer, the season’s household ratings champ, Judge Judy, was partially in repeats and gave back 5% to a still-powerful 5.6.
Meanwhile sister court show Hot Bench was mostly in reruns but held steady at a 2.0 and ranked as the No. 3 show in daytime behind only Judy and talk-topper Dr. Phil.
Phil aired five days of encore episodes and eased 4% to a new season low 2.2, but still finished first among the talkers for the 148th week in a row.
Live with Kelly and Ryan, on hiatus for a second week, held its ground at 1.9 and was the second-highest talk show for the 19th straight session airing a combination of taped and repacked programs.
Rounding out the big three, Ellen DeGeneres declined 19% to a new season low 1.3 with repeats.
And, in tryout news, comedy game show hopeful Punchline began a six-seek test July 15 with a 0.4 rating/1 share weighted metered market average, which was even with its June 2018 time periods, but down 33% from its lead-ins.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Dr. Phil (0.9, unchanged from the week before)
- Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.8, unchanged)
- Maury (0.7, unchanged)
- Ellen DeGeneres (0.5, -29%), tied with Steve Wilkos (0.5, unchanged)
In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
