Syndies Take A Hit From Impeachment Coverage
Ratings for daytime shows in the week ending Nov. 24 were dramatically skewed by massive preemptions for the impeachment hearings on three of the five weekdays. In fact, the preemptions were so extensive that some programs counted only two days — Monday and Friday — in their weekly averages.
In access, Jeopardy, without super contestant James Holzhauer competing, declined 13% to a 6.3 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating and landed in a three-way tie for first place with Wheel of Fortune and season-to-date leader Judge Judy, although Judy was tops in the key women 25-54 demo.
The winning Judy rating was most impressive, since on Nov. 19 alone it lost its primary run in numerous markets, including five of the top 20.
Unlike most strips with heavy preemptions, the courtroom queen was able to score a big number without getting the benefit of any days being broken out of its weekly average.
Among talk shows, Dr. Phil, which like Judy, counted all five days in its average despite preemptions, slipped 8% to a 2.3, but still finished first in the category for the 168th week in a row.
Live with Kelly and Ryan did very well to remain at its season high 2.1 and take second place for the 39th straight week.
BRAND CONNECTIONS
Declining shows included Ellen DeGeneres, which was down 11% to a 1.7, and Wendy Williams, which lost 14% to a 1.2.
Turning to the newcomers, The Kelly Clarkson Show, which has already been renewed for next season, gave back 7% to a still top-rated 1.3 after being denied a breakout on Nov. 21 despite being shredded by preemptions.
High-profile Tamron Hall, which is growing in many markets, was able to hold its season-best 1.0. A third new talker, Mel Robbins, was further back with an unchanged 0.4.
Elsewhere, Jerry Springer’s Judge Jerry got another favorable verdict, holding its ground at a 1.0 and continuing to outperform the new court shows.
Among the established magazines, all of the top six were down week to week except for TMZ and Daily Mail TV, which refused to decline, hanging tough at 1.1 and 0.8, respectively.
Meanwhile, magazine hopeful Central Ave averaged a weighted 0.8 rating/2 share in its metered markets for week four of a five-week test run that began Nov. 4. That was down 20% from its lead-in and off 27% from its year-ago time periods.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Live with Kelly and Ryan (1.0, unchanged from the week before)
- Dr. Phil (0.9, -10%)
- Ellen DeGeneres (0.8, unchanged)
- Kelly Clarkson (0.6, unchanged), tied with Maury (0.6, unchanged) and Wendy Williams (0.6, -14%)
- Steve Wilkos (0.5, unchanged)
