WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

‘Family Feud’ Fights Its Way To Top Of The Games

In the session ending March 21, beset by March Madness preemptions and the introduction of Daylight Saving Time, Drew Barrymore posted a 20% weekly gain and Family Feud was the top game show for the first time since the week ending Jan. 3.

Newcomer Drew Barrymore scored the biggest increase among the talkers, barreling ahead 20% and matching its second highest rating to date in the session ending March 21. Barrymore, which was recently renewed for a second season, jumped to a 0.6 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating and notched its best rating since February.

The only other double-digit gainers among talkers were Kelly Clarkson, which climbed 13% to a 0.9; Ellen DeGeneres, which rebounded 11% to a 1.0; and Dr. Oz, which recovered 17% to a 0.7.

Live with Kelly and Ryan was No. 1 in the category for the 16th time in 17 weeks (including three ties) with a steady 1.8. Season-to-date, Live is leading talk by all key measure for the first time in its 33 seasons.

Dr. Phil was a close second despite being heavily preempted and easing 6% to a 1.6.

Courtroom phenom Judge Judy continued to light up all of daytime with a 5.2 and season to date Judy topped all of syndication with a 5.9 most current live-plus-7 household rating.

In access, the beginning of Daylight Saving Time and March Madness caused problems for some shows. That said, Family Feud managed to hang tough at a 5.4 and was the top game show for the first time since the week ending Jan. 3.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Jeopardy, which had ruled the genre for the prior four weeks (including one tie with Wheel of Fortune) fell 5% to a 5.3 with Katie Couric at the podium, while Wheel skidded 11% to a 5.0.

Meanwhile, all the magazines did a good job of holding their ground in the face of the annual college basketball blockbuster event. Leaders Entertainment Tonight and Inside Edition both stayed at a 2.4, followed by Access Hollywood, TMZ and Extra at 1.0, 0.8 and 0.7, respectively. Of note, Extra strengthened 33% percent in the women 25-54 demo.
