Olympics Put A Torch To Syndie Ratings
As expected, most syndicated shows took a dive in the first full week of the Tokyo Olympics, the session ending Aug.1, and many were retitled to avoid the having the lower ratings included in their regular full-season averages.
For example, the Olympic-renamed Jeopardy with fan favorite LeVar Burton at the podium was among the numerous programs penalized by the games and did well to slip only 6% from the week before to a 4.4 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating.
That topped the retitled Wheel of Fortune, which skidded 13% to 3.9, but lost to the Olympic-monikered game show and chart leader Family Feud although that also faltered, losing 5% to a 5.2.
Elsewhere in access time period, Extra and TMZ were the only magazines in the top 4 that were not retitled and the only ones able to hold all of their ground at a 0.6 and a 0.7, respectively.
The Olympic-titled Inside Edition led the group, but sank 10% to a 1.9.
The rebadged Live with Kelly and Ryan continued to rock the talk show ranks, finishing first in the class for the 12th week in a row by managing a 1.4 despite strong Olympics headwinds

Repeats of the retitled Dr. Phil pulled back 14% to a 1.2 but took silver, while the un-retitled Maury marked a new all-time low 0.8 with an 11% erosion.
The top talk shows for the week among women 25-54 were:

- Dr. Phil—OLYM (0.4, -20%)
- Wendy Williams—OLYM (0.3, unchanged)
- Maury (0.3, unchanged)
- Steve Wilkos (0.3, unchanged)
