WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

A Pair Of Mags Make Ratings Moves

The increases for Extra and Entertainment Tonight came despite the debut of Daylight Saving Time and preemptions for March Madness in the week ending March 19.

Two magazines made strong moves in the session ending March 19, with Extra scoring the category’s largest increase, jumping 20% to a 1.2 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating despite the double negatives of Daylight Saving Time draining viewers and preemptions for March Madness, the annual NCAA men’s basketball tournament on CBS affiliates.

Entertainment Tonight was also hot, leading the magazines for the 33rd straight week while growing 6% to a 3.4. On the other hand, Inside Edition dropped 10% to a second-place 2.6, matching its season low.

Among the closely watched talk shows, Crime Watch Daily clocked the most improvement, surging 22% to a 1.1 and matching its season high. In addition, it grew 10% from the same week last year, which was the best annual increase in the genre.

Another positive mover was Steve Harvey, which rebounded 21% from a season low in the previous frame to a 1.7, but was still down 6% year to year.

Also of note, newcomer Harry, which was just honored with its first Best Entertainment Talk Show Host Emmy nomination for Harry Connick Jr., and renewed for season two, strengthened 10% to a 1.1 in households and jumped 20% among women 25-54 to a 0.6.

Dr. Phil easily topped the talkers for the 28th consecutive stanza, despite being in reruns for most of the week and declining 14% to a 3.0.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Live with Kelly snared second place, climbing 5% to a 2.3, and for the fifth straight week outperformed Ellen DeGeneres, which recovered 16% to a 2.2.

Back in access, Family Feud inched up 3% to a 6.9 and continued to overwhelm the game shows. Wheel of Fortune skidded 11% to a 5.8 and fell into a second-place tie with Jeopardy, which lost 9% to a 5.8.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.4, -13% from the week before)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.1, +22%), tied with Live with Kelly (1.1, unchanged)
  • Maury (1.0, unchanged), tied with Wendy Williams (1.0, +11%)
  • Steve Wilkos (0.9, +13%)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
