Phil extended its winning streak in the genre to 31 weeks with a 3.3 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, spiking both 6% from the previous frame and from the same week a year ago.
April Comes In Like A Lion For ‘Dr. Phil’
The first full week of April was a strong one for Dr. Phil, which widened its lead in the talk show race after jumping to a four-week high, and was the sole syndie talker to outperform last year in the session ending April 9.
Phil extended its winning streak in the genre to 31 weeks with a 3.3 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, spiking 6% from the previous frame.
In addition, the top chat fest grew 6% from the same week a year ago. The only other shows in the category to avoid year-to-year declines were sophomore Crime Watch Daily and conflict series Jerry Springer, which both held steady annually, although Springer suffered talk’s largest weekly loss, slipping 14%.
Live with Kelly returned from a two-week hiatus with a stable 2.2 in second place and finished ahead of closet rival Ellen DeGeneres for an eighth straight week. Ellen added 11% to a third-place 2.1.
On the demo front, The Doctors had the week’s healthiest percentage increase, improving 33% among women 25-54, even though the show aired only encore episodes.
In access, the top game shows were soft except for Family Feud, which stayed at a 6.4, led the genre and finished second overall to syndication champ Judge Judy. Wheel of Fortune fell 3% to a 6.1; Jeopardy also sagged 3% to a 5.9; while Who Wants to Be a Millionaire devalued 6% to a 1.6.
Elsewhere, Entertainment Tonight, holding firm at a 3.1, increased its advantage over second-place magazine Inside Edition, which eroded 7 to a 2.7. Extra earned the best percentage gain in the category, jumping 9% to a 1.2 despite numerous sports preemptions.
Leading the entire chart, Judge Judy hung tough at a first-place 6.7, topping all syndicated strips for the 26th time in the past 36 weeks, even though it was in repeats on a couple of days.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Dr. Phil (1.4, +8% from the week before)
- Live with Kelly (1.0, unchanged), tied with Maury (1.0, unchanged) and Ellen DeGeneres (1.0, +11%)
- Steve Wilkos (0.9, unchanged)
- Jerry Springer (0.8, -11%)
