WEEKLY SYNDICATED RATINGS REPORT

Breaking News Take Toll On Syndie Numbers

Preemptions for or competition from Washington stories affects the ratings for a number of magazine, court and game shows in the session ending June 18.

Ratings for many syndicated shows were lower in the week ending June 18, thanks to competition with — or preemptions from — news coverage of Attorney General Jeff Sessions Senate testimony on June 13 and the June 14 shooting of House Republican Whip Steve Scalise and four others on a Virginia baseball field.

Some of the top-tier magazines were particularly hard hit. For example, TMZ dropped to its lowest rating in 10 years, falling 15% from the prior week and tumbling 21% from last year at this rime to a record series low 1.1 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen.

That put TMZ in a tie with Extra, which managed to hold steady at a 1.1 despite the preemptions.

Inside Edition slipped to a new season low 2.4, down 4% for the week and off 11% from last year, while Access Hollywood and The Insider matched their previous season lows with Access unchanged at a 1.2 and Insider easing 10% to a 0.9.

Magazine leader Entertainment Tonight avoided the declines, standing pat at a first-place 2.7 and setting the pace in the category for the 46th week in a row.

Elsewhere in access, the top three quiz shows — Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy — all sagged to new season-lows, however Feud, with a loss of 8% to a 5.9, finished first in the group for the 60th consecutive week.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

In daytime, reruns of Dr. Phil dipped 4% to a new season-low 2.6, but still rose 4% from last year and dominated the talk shows for the 41st straight week.

Live with Kelly and Ryan snared second place with a steady 2.1 and opened a large lead over third-place Ellen DeGeneres, which faded 15% to a new season-low 1.7 with encore episodes.

On the positive side, true crime Crime Watch Daily went into repeats on all five days but still held firm at a 0.9, while gaining 25% among women 25-54. In addition, it was one of the few shows to outperform last year, shooting up 13%.

The highest-rated show for the 11th time in the past 12 weeks was Judge Judy, which was in repeats on four of the five days and down-ticked 3% for the week, but still improved 7% from last year to a 6.3. Of note, Judy was the only show on the overall chart to surpass the 6 level in the ratings.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.0, -9% from the week before)
  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.9, unchanged)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (0.8, -11%), tied with Maury (0.8, unchanged) and Wendy Williams (0.8, unchanged)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
