WEEKLY SYNDICATED RATINGS ROUNDUP

Dec. Begins With Strong Syndie Showings

Many first-run strips kicked off the post-sweep period with increases, including double-digit gains by Dr. Phil as well as the the top three game shows and the top three magazines.

Ratings for syndicated shows surged in the post-sweep session ending Dec. 4, with several strips hitting new season highs.

Among magazines, new executive producer Sharon Hoffman took over the The Insider and the show had the largest weekly increase of any strip in syndication, shooting up 30% to a news season best 1.3 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating.

Hoffman also just began helming Entertainment Tonight, which jumped 13% to a 3.4 and led the magazine group for the 18th straight frame.

In talk, true crime series Crime Watch Daily came up big and was the only show in the category to hit a new season high, leaping 22% — both week to week and year to year — to a new season best 1.1.

Top talker for the 13th week in a row, Dr. Phil, spiked 29% to a 3.6 and improved 16% from last year.

Ellen DeGeneres was a distant second, with an unchanged 2.6, while down 4% from last year.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

On the other hand, Harry, the only new first-run strip, showed plenty of spark, jumping 20% in key demos and 20% in households to a 1.2 in its 12th week on the air.

The big three game show all recovered after dropping to their worst levels of the season in the prior holiday-hindered session and eked out new season highs. Leader Family Feud gained 18% to a 7.1; runner-up Wheel of Fortune rebounded 16% to a 6.5 and third-ranked Jeopardy added 17% to a 6.2.

Compared to last year at this time, Feud rose 20%, Wheel fell 7% and Jeopardy dropped 3%.

At the top of the overall chart, Judge Judy continued to preside for the 18th consecutive week with a 7.3, dipping 3% from its season high in the prior session, but still even with last year.

In off net, leader Big Bang Theory recovered 14% to a 5.8. Newcomer Last Man Standing was unchanged at a 1.9, tying Mike & Molly and Family Guy for fourth place among sitcoms.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.6, +23% from the week before)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.2, -8%)
  • Live with Kelly (1.1, -8%)
  • Maury (1.0, unchanged), tied with Wendy Williams (1.0, +11%)
  • Steve Wilkos (0.9, unchanged)
