WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

‘Dr. Phil’ On Top Of An Active Talk Field

The genre features much movement in the week ending April 30. Lots of flat or down performances in the other categories.

Talk shows were in the spotlight in the session ending April 30, which included the first two days of the key May sweep.

Dr. Phil continued to be the standout on the chatfest circuit, growing 3% to a seven-week high 3.4 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, and dominating the talkers for a 34th straight week. Phil also improved the most from last year, increasing 10%.

However, for the first time in nearly three months, sole second-place honors went to Ellen DeGeneres, which added 5% to a 2.3. Live with Kelly, in its final week before co-host Ryan Seacrest joined the program, dipped 5% to a 2.1. In overnight ratings, which are not the same as the national numbers, the newly rechristened Live with Kelly and Ryan got underway in the frame ending May 7, growing 18% from the prior week to a 2.6 rating/9 share and ranking first or second in its time period in 13 of the top 15 markets, including nine of the top 10.

Back in the national stats, Maury held onto fourth place, remaining at a 1.6, and Steve Harvey rounded out the top five unchanged at a 1.5, but down 21% from last year.

Meanwhile, Rachael Ray retreated to a new season low, losing 8% for the week and declining 27% from last year to a 1.1. This tied Dr. Oz, which remained at its series low 1.1 and also lost 27% from last year.

In access, Family Feud finished first among the quiz shows as usual, gaining 3% to a 6.5.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Wheel of Fortune fell 2% to a 5.9 and dropped into a tie with Jeopardy, which inched up 2% to a 5.9.

Elsewhere, Entertainment Tonight topped magazines for the 39th consecutive week with a steady 3.0.

The No. 1 strip in syndication overall for the fifth straight week was Judge Judy, which strengthened 3% and cruised to a three-week high 6.7 with more than triple the rating of any other court show, despite airing mostly reruns.

  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.1, +10%), tied with Maury (1.1, +10%)
