WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Election Coverage Disrupts Syndie Viewing

Talk shows and games post some gains in the week ending Nov. 13, but many others in first-run are down or flat. In off-net, freshman Last Man Standing grew 6% to a new season high.

Coverage of the presidential election — including preemptions for expanded newscasts and sharply higher cable news viewing — kept a lid on ratings for some syndicated shows, although many others saw minor gains in the session ending Nov. 13, which included the half-way point of the November sweep.

Among the daytime highlights:

Dr. Phil scored a big win in the key women 25-54 demo and easily rolled to its 10th straight victory in households among all talk shows, despite dipping 3% from the previous frame to a 3.5 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating.

Live with Kelly and Ellen DeGeneres tied for second place, with both growing 4% for the session to a 2.5. Live surged 25% from the week before on Nov. 9 — the day after the election — to a season record daily high 3.0, and matched its best weekly stats of the year, while Ellen hit a new season high mark.

Compared to last year at this time, Crime Watch Daily clocked the most annual growth, improving 11% to a 1.0.

In first-run rookie news, Harry Connick Jr.’s Harry talker held steady at a 1.2, but jumped to its highest weekly ratings yet in seven metered markets including Cincinnati where it took WKRC’s 9 a.m. hour up 48% from last year to a 3.1 rating/8 share average.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

In access, Family Feud added 6% to a 6.8 and was the top game show. In second place, Wheel of Fortune inched up 2% to a 6.1.

At the very top of the chart, Judge Judy caught her breath after racing to a new season high in the prior proceeding and eased 3% to a 7.1 against election coverage. However, Judy was still voted syndication’s No. 1 strip overall for the 15th week in a row.

In off-net syndication, freshman Last Man Standing grew 6% to a new season high 1.8, tying Mike & Molly (which also rose 6% to a 1.8) for fifth place among the sitcoms.

Big Bang Theory easily topped the category, improving 8% to a new season high 5.3.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.7, unchanged from the week before)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.2, unchanged), tied with Live with Kelly (1.2, unchanged)
  • Maury (1.0, unchanged), tied with Wendy Williams (1.0, +11%) and Steve Wilkos (1.0, +11%)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
