WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Fresh Talk In The New Season Boosts Genre

The other categories remain mostly flat or down in the week ending Sept. 11. Judge Judy remains at the top of the overall chart even though it was down 1% from the previous frame.

Several of the top-tier talkers — including Live with Kelly, Ellen DeGeneres and Steve Harvey — began their new seasons in the week ending Sept. 11, however Dr. Phil led the pack even though it didn’t unwrap its 15th season until Sept. 12.

Syndication’s most popular doctor finished first in talk, hitting a three-month high 2.7 live-plus- same-day national Nielsen rating, up 17% from the week before. Ratings for Phil are expected to vault even higher next week when national numbers for its new season opener featuring JonBenet Ramsey’s brother are released.

Live was sharp, getting season 29 underway with a 9% advance to a five-week high 2.5. Ellen started season 14 with fresh programming and a 44% rebound from its season low in the prior week to a third-place 2.3.

Somewhat further back, Steve Harvey came to life, perking up 7% to open season five with a fourth-place 1.5, although that was still down 17% from its debut week last year.

In the overnights for the session ending Sept. 18, Harry was the easily the top-rated newcomer with a premiere week 1.1 rating/3 share primary run average, and almost 900,000 daily households in the 56 metered markets alone. Harry nearly tripled the almost 300,000 households that rookie talker T.D. Jakes drew for its first week in 33 metered markets and was 57% higher than the 0.7 rating/2 share primary run average for Jakes.

Harry’s biggest rating was in Fort Myers, Fla., where its first week scored a 3.6/9 and surged 125% from the year-ago time period average.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Back in the national ratings, Judge Judy in the last week of its 20th season was the No. 1 strip in syndication overall for the sixth straight session. The highly rated court show was partially in repeats and dipped 1% to a 6.8.

Elsewhere, Family Feud was off 2% to a 6.2, but still routed all game shows for the 20th week in a row.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Live with Kelly (1.2, +9% from the week before), tied with Dr. Phil (1.2, +20%) and Ellen DeGeneres (1.2, +50%)
  • Maury (0.9, +13%)
  • Steve Wilkos (0.7, -13%) tied with Steve Harvey (0.7, unchanged), Rachael Ray (0.7, +17%) and Wendy Williams (0.7, +17%)
