‘Kelly and Ryan’ Bests ‘Megyn Kelly’ In Week 1

The syndicated Kelly and Ryan topped the highly promoted opening week of NBC’s Megyn Kelly Today by a daily average of more than 300,000 viewers —2.85 million to 2.51 million.

Dr. Phil was the top talker in the session ending Oct. 1. Phil scored a 3.4 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, its highest in 21 weeks, and was the only one of the 15 talk shows moving up, leading the talkers by a wide margin for the 56th consecutive frame.

Ellen DeGeneres, at a 2.2, and Live with Kelly and Ryan, at a 2.1, were next in line. However, Kelly and Ryan topped the highly promoted opening week of Megyn Kelly Today by a daily average of more than 300,000 viewers —2.85 million to 2.51 million.

In terms of ratings, Kelly and Ryan was 17% higher as Megyn posted a 1.8 compared to a 2.1 for its principal rival, according to Nielsen’s national stats. The two compete head to head in the largest markets.

Elsewhere in talk, Steve Harvey’s new Steve maintained its 1.3 national rating.

Among the newcomers, leader Daily Mail TV continued to deliver strong ratings after its promising opening, jumping 11% in its second week to a 1.0 and topping all new first-run shows.

Mail’s main challenger Page Six TV held steady at a 0.7 in households and grew 25% among women 25-54 to a 0.5. That tied Daily Mail in the key demo.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Page Six outperformed rival Daily Mail in both ratings and key demos for its primary metered market runs and rose to its highest overnights yet in nine of the top 10 markets for the week ending Oct. 8.

Back in the national ratings, Funny You Should Ask dropped 20% to a 0.4, while Pickler & Ben was unchanged at a 0.3.

Entertainment Tonight grew 3% to a 3.1 and finished first among magazines for the 56th straight week.

Among game shows, Family Feud was best, dipping 2% to a 6.0. Jeopardy was second with a flat 5.8, and Wheel of Fortune fell to third for the first time in 10 weeks after losing 2% to a 5.7.

Judge Judy sparked the most Nielsen fireworks as the highest-rated show on the overall chart for the seventh week in a row, logging a syndication-best 6.9 despite taking a 5% dip from the prior week.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.4, +8% from the week before)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.1, unchanged)
  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (1.0, unchanged)
  • Maury (0.9, unchanged), tied with Wendy Williams (0.9, unchanged)
  • Steve Wilkos (0,7 -13%), tied with Jerry Springer (0.7, unchanged)

$20 million a year to finish behind syndication….. NBC should cut the losses now.
