WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Lower Ratings In Week Before Christmas

Bah humbug. No talkers, first-run rookies, magazines or courtrooms were up; and only one game showed improvement in the week ending Dec. 24.

The traditionally slow week leading into Christmas made it extremelydifficult for shows to gain ground. For example, the only Top 5 magazine to avoid any rating declines in the session ending Dec. 24 was Extra, which managed to hold steady week to week at its season high 1.3 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating.

Showing the most improvement compared to last year was the newly reminted Access, which grew 8% annually to a 1.4.

Entertainment Tonight and sister show Inside Edition continued to share the magazine lead for a third straight week.

Among court shows, the only program to outperform last year was syndication champion Judge Judy, which rose 6% annually, beating its nearest judicial competitor by almost 5 rating points despite dipping 1% week to week to a still first-place 7.0.

Judy was also the top-rated strip in all of syndication for the 18th time in the past 19 weeks.

After Judy, game show leader Family Feud was No. 2 overall, while slipping 4% to a 6.6.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Turning to talk shows, Dr. Phil easily dominated the category for the 68th week in a row, even though it was in reruns for most of the frame, and gave back 12% to a 3.0.

Live with Kelly and Ryan moved up to second place with a steady 2.3, while Ellen DeGeneres, which was one of several shows partially preempted on Dec. 20 for President Trump’s speech on the income tax overhaul bill, dropped 19% to 2.1.

On the positive side Steve maintained its season-high 1.4 and climbed into fourth place, tying Maury, which slipped 7% to a 1.4.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.2, -14% from the week before)
  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (1.0, unchanged), tied with Ellen DeGeneres (1.0, -9%)
  • Maury (0.9, unchanged)
  • Steve Wilkos (0.8, unchanged)
  • Wendy Williams (0.7, -22%)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
