WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Magazines Circle Globes For Ratings Gains

Every one of the top five shows in the genre hit or exceeded their highest ratings of the season in the week ending Jan. 14 aided by their coverage of the awards.

Fueled by heavy coverage of the 75th Golden Globe Awards, magazines were big winners in the session ending Jan. 14. In fact, every one of the top five shows hit or exceeded their highest ratings of the season.

Entertainment Tonight and Inside Edition set the pace, with both scoring new season-best 3.4 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen ratings, up 3% from the prior frame.

TMZ added 7% to a new season high 1.6; Access matched its biggest numbers of the season, spiking 7% to a 1.5; while Extra clocked the largest increase of all, surging 17% to a season record 1.4, its strongest showing since May 2016.

In daytime, Dr. Phil was on fire, jumping 13% to an eight-week high 3.6 and easily leading the talkers for the 71st consecutive week (with one tie).

Ellen DeGeneres was next in line, gaining 4% to a new season high 2.7.

True crime specialist Crime Watch Daily was the only other first-run show in the category to achieve a new high for the season, leaping 10% to a 1.1, its hottest performance in eight months.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Also of note, Wendy Williams returned from its winter hiatus and spiked 27% to a 1.4.

The No. 1 show overall was Judge Judy, which drew a weekly cume of more than 56 million viewers and rocketed to a syndication-best 7.8, its highest rating in more than 22 months.

Judy creation Hot Bench was also one of the week’s stars, advancing 4% to a 2.6 and matching its season high.

The top two first-run rookies both jumped to their previous series highs. Daily Mail TV registered a 1.1 in homes and surged 20% in the key women 25-54 demo, while Page Six TV rose 14% to a 0.8, matching its best score to date. As expected, both shows have been green-lit for a second season.

Family Feud dipped 3% to a 7.3, but still led the other game shows for a seventh straight week and finished second to overall syndication champ Judge Judy.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.5, +15% from the week before)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.3, unchanged)
  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (1.1, -8%), tied with Maury (1.1, +10%)
  • Wendy Williams (0.9, +29%)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
