WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Magazines Show Gains From Thicke Coverage

Coverage of the Growing Pains star’s unexpected death boosts Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood and Extra in the week ending Dec. 18.

Several of the top-tier entertainment magazines made significant gains in the session ending Dec. 18, with extensive reports on the life of Growing Pains star Alan Thicke who died suddenly on Dec. 13.

Entertainment Tonight jumped to a new season high 3.5 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, up 3% for the week and up 13% from last year, the biggest annual increase among all magazines. In addition, ET led the category for the 20th straight week.

Access Hollywood also edged ahead, adding 7% to a 1.5, although it was still down 12% from last year at this time.

Extra delivered the best week-to-week advance in the group, spiking 8% to a seven-week high 1.4, and maintaining its year-ago score.

In daytime, Dr. Phil had no trouble handling the talk shows for the 15th week in a row with a 3.4, dipping 3% for the week, but still improving 10% from last year.

Ellen DeGeneres was flat at a 2.6 for the fourth consecutive frame, while Live with Kelly rose 4% to a 2.5, its strongest showing since the week of Nov. 21.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Harry, the newcomer starring Harry Connick Jr., maintained its 1.2 even though it was preempted in numerous markets by President Obama’s Dec. 16 press conference. Moreover, the season’s only new entrant in first-run hit its highest weekly ratings yet in several markets, including a 3.5 rating/9 share at 11 a.m. in Indianapolis.

In off-net syndication, leader Big Bang Theory slipped 4% but was still way ahead with a 5.4.
