Mags Thrive As May Sweep Gets Underway

The genre posts solid gains in the week ending April 26 on viewer interest in the Bruce Jenner story.

The traditional entertainment magazines got off to a strong start in the May sweep (April 23-May 20) in the week ending April 26 amid high viewer interest in reality star Bruce Jenner opening up to Diane Sawyer.

  • Leader Entertainment Tonight jumped 6% to a four-week-high 3.4 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, and rose 3% from last year in the session, which included the first two weekdays of the survey period.
  • Access Hollywood grew 6% to a 1.7 and leaped 13% from last year.
  • Extra scored its strongest ratings since mid-March with a 7% surge both week to week and year to year, to a 1.5.
  • The Insider improved 8%, both weekly and annually, to a 1.3

In daytime Dr. Phil finished first among talk shows for the 15th straight frame (including ties), and the 30th in the past 34 weeks, with a 10% leap to a 3.4, its best performance since early March. Phil also set the pace among women 25-54 jumping 13% to a 1.7 in the target demo.

Live with Kelly & Michael was the only other talker to achieve the 3 rating level, climbing 7% to a second-place 3.0.

Also having big week in talk were:

  • Ellen DeGeneres, which added 8% to a 2.6.
  • Wendy Williams, which grew 21% to a 1.7.
  • Dr. Oz, which added 7% to a 1.5.
  • The Doctors, which gained a healthy 10% to a 1.1 and shot up 25% among women 25-54.

Compared to last year at this time, Dr. Oz (currently facing credibility attacks from other doctors) was down the most, declining 25%, while Wendy had the biggest increase, gaining 21%.

Rachael Ray had the second-best annual improvement, growing 8%. Live was next, strengthening 7%.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Elsewhere, Judge Judy hit its highest rating in six weeks, with a 5% advance to a 6.7 to lead the gavelers.

Among shows not yet cleared nationally, Access Hollywood Live rose 14%, both week to week and year to year, averaging a 0.8 rating/3 share across its 18 metered markets.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.7, +13% from the week before)
  • Live with Kelly & Michael (1.5, +15%)
  • Maury (1.4, +8%,) tied with Ellen DeGeneres (1.4, +17%)
  • Wendy Williams (1.2, +9%)
  • Steve Wilkos (1.0, unchanged)
