Numerous retitled show bounce back in the week ending Feb. 25, with some posting double-digit gains compared to the first week of the Pyeongchang games.
Olympics Take Lesser Toll On Syndies In Wk. 2
Most syndicated shows rebounded in the second week of Winter Olympics in the session ending Feb. 25, including many of the first-run strips that were again retitled as “Olympic Specials.”
For example, the top magazines were the renamed Special Olympic Editions of Entertainment Tonight and Inside Edition. Both spiked 4% from the prior frame and remained tied for first place at a 2.8 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating.
Meanwhile, the entertainment magazines got nice boosts from next-day coverage of the 90th Academy Awards on March 5. ET won the Oscars ratings crown in the genre with a 12% increase over its year-ago time period numbers to a 3.6 rating/6 share primary run weighted metered market average.
Also coming up big was Extra, which grew 13% over last year to a 1.8/4, and Inside Edition, which although not strictly an entertainment mag, still gained 10% to 3.2/6.
In addition, Live with Kelly and Ryan’s Live After-Oscar Show averaged a 3.0/10 on Monday, its highest rating of the season and improved 25% from its year-ago time period average.
Back in the weekly national ratings, the renamed Olympic edition of Dr. Phil climbed 7% to a 3.1 and widened its lead over the talkers.
At a steady 2.3, second place was again awarded to Live Olympics, while the Ellen DeGeneres Olympics episodes recovered 16% to a 2.2 but remained in third.
The only other shows in the category’s top 10 moving up by double digits were Dr. Oz Olympics, which rose 22% to a 1.1 and Crime Watch Daily, which captured an 11% increase to a 1.0.
The top closely watched newcomers were mixed. The Daily Mail TV Olympic week slipped 9% in households to a 1.0 and declined 17% among women 25-54 to a 0.5. However, up and coming rookie Page Six TV remained solid against the Winter Games at a 0.7 in homes and tied Daily Mail in the key demo.
The strongest performer of the week was the Judge Judy Olympics strip, which overcame preemptions and bolted a hefty 14% to a syndication-best 7.3.
In addition, the Judge Judy Sheindlin creation Hot Bench Olympics shows also barreled ahead 14% to a 2.5 and became the third highest strip in daytime behind only Judy and Phil.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Dr. Phil Olympics Special (1.3, +8% from the week before)
- Live with Kelly and Ryan Olympics Special (1.1, unchanged), tied with Ellen DeGeneres Olympics Special (1.1, +10%)
- Maury (0.9, unchanged)
- Wendy Williams (0.8, +14%)
- Steve Wilkos (0.7, unchanged)
In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
