WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Six Syndies Report Weekly Ratings Gains

Summer continues to take its toll on first-run, with only Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Hot Bench, Judge Mathis, Divorce Court and Access Hollywood moving up in the week ending July 30.

Dr. Phil was the only talk show in the top seven moving up week to week in the sleepy summer session ending July 30. Phil convincingly led the talkers, first-run syndication’s largest category, for the 47th consecutive frame even though it aired only repeat episodes on all five days.

Phil jumped 4% from the week before and surged 17% from last year to a 2.8 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, its strongest numbers in nearly two months.

Second-place Live with Kelly and Ryan dipped 5% to a 1.9, but still finished ahead of closest rival Ellen DeGeneres for a ninth straight week. Ellen slipped 6% to a 1.5, tying an unchanged Maury.

Conflict talker Jerry Springer was flat at a fifth-place 1.3, but grew 18% from last year.

True-crime series Crime Watch Daily — which copped a 25% gain in the key women 25-54 demo and improved 13% year to year in households — was the only other show in the genre besides Springer and Phil with an annual increase.

In access, Entertainment Tonight made it an entire year (52 straight weeks) as the No. 1 magazine. ET eased 4% for the week, but rose 4% from last year to a first-place 2.6.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Compared to last year, Extra was the biggest winner in the category, shooting up 22%.

Overall ratings champ Judge Judy dipped 2% to a 6.4 with reruns, but ate syndicated TV’s lunch for the eighth straight week (with one tie). Judy’s creation Hot Bench was the No. 3 daytime show for the sixth week, growing 5% for both the week and the year to a 2.2.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.1, unchanged from the week before)
  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.9, -10%), tied with Maury (0.9, +13%)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (0.7, unchanged), tied with Jerry Springer (0.7, unchanged), Wendy Williams (0.7, -22%) and Steve Wilkos (0.7, unchanged)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
