WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Steady Sailing Again For Most Syndies

In first run for the week ending May 21, only two talk shows, two games and one courtroom improved from the previous session. All the magazines finished flat.

The session ending May 21, which included the third full week of the May sweep, was another strong one for syndication queen Judge Judy Sheindlin whose eponymous program pulled further ahead of the field, and for her budding courtroom creation Hot Bench.

Judge Judy was easily the No. 1 show on the overall chart for the eighth week in a row with a top-rated 6.7 live-plus-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, holding steady for the frame and attracting more than 9.4 million viewers on average each day.

Gaveler Hot Bench delivered the biggest increase in court, racing ahead 10% to a 2.3 and ranking as the third-highest-rated daytime strip behind only Judy and talk show champ Dr. Phil.

Phil eased 3% to a 3.2 in a mostly down week for talkers in the top tier, but convincingly led the category for a 37th straight week and was the only talk show ahead of last year, improving 3%.

Ellen DeGeneres was a full point behind Phil in second, gaining 5% to a 2.2 and squeaking past Live with Kelly and Ryan.

The third week of Kelly and Ryan finished a respectable third out of the 14 talkers, dipping 5% to a 2.1 after being interrupted and partially preempted by the President Trump and Turkey President Erdogan press conference on May 16.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Further back, Maury slipped 6 to a distant fourth-place 1.5, while fifth went to Wendy Williams at a steady 1.4, tied with Steve Harvey, which dropped 7% to a 1.4 and fell 22% from last year.

The Doctors came up with the healthiest percentage in talk, strengthening 14% to a 0.8.

In a rarity for access, every one of the magazines was stable week to week with Entertainment Tonight at a 2.9 showing the way.

Game shows were mixed with Family Feud dipping 2% to a 6.1, but still leading the game shows for the 56th straight session.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.4, -7% from the week before)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.1, +10%)
  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (1.0, -9%)
  • Maury (0.9, unchanged), tied with Wendy Williams (0.9, unchanged)
  • Steve Wilkos (0.8, unchanged)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
