WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Talk Shows Grow Some Ratings

Many in the genre post week-to-week Nielsen gains as April winds down, with the gainers including category leader Dr. Phil, Ellen, Jerry, Maury and Crime Watch Daily. Also, yesterday's Ryan Seacrest announcement boosted Live with Kelly's ratings.

Talk shows were hot in the session ending April 23, which was the last full week before the important May sweeps, led by a strong performance from Dr. Phil. The top talker leapt 10% to a 3.3 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, and easily led the group for the 33rd week in a row. In addition, among the top five talk shows, Phil was up the most by far from last year.

Live with Kelly held steady at a 2.2 and battled Ellen DeGeneres to a tie for second place. Ellen recovered 10% to a 2.2.

Meanwhile, in overnight ratings, Kelly Ripa’s new co-host Ryan Seacrest had a big debut yesterday (May 1) with the newly renamed Live with Kelly and Ryan winning its time slot in all of the top five markets and ballooning 48% from the prior Monday to a 3.1 rating/11 share metered market average.

Back in the national ratings, the other double-digit gainers in talk was Crime Watch Daily, which shot up 11% to a 1.0 and 1.3 million total viewers, and recently renewed newcomer Harry, which strengthened 11% to a 1.0 and an average of more than 1.2 million daily viewers.

Elsewhere in daytime, Judge Judy continued to blister the court shows and was the No. 1 show in the genre and overall for a fourth straight session with a 6.5 for a second straight week even though it was in reruns all five days

In access, most of the top-tier magazines were sharp, with Entertainment Tonight gaining 3% to a 3.0 and leading the field for the 38th consecutive week.
