WXYZ Detroit Okla. Telethon Raises $85,000

In the aftermath of one of the worst tornados in U.S. history, Scripps-owned WXYZ Detroit (DMA 11) stepped up to help those affected by the deadly tornado that struck Moore, Okla.

In partnership with the American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Region, WXYZ hosted a live telethon on Wednesday, May 22, to raise money for those affected by the Oklahoma disaster. In a short time, Channel 7 viewers donated $84,911 on WXYZ and wxyz.com.

From 4:30 until 8 p.m., more than 50 volunteers, including 7 Action News anchors, reporters and staffers, answered phone lines to take pledges from WXYZ viewers.

“Once again, the entire WXYZ team and the Detroit community rose to the occasion and took action. Our ability to respond to this tragedy and mobilize our efforts in a matter of hours truly reflects the passion of this team — and this city,” said WXYZ Station Manager Mike Murri.

As the recovery in Oklahoma continues, those wanting to make a donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund can go to wxyz.com, or text “REDCROSS” to 90999 to donate $10.

A wonderful gesture, but is that all they could get? While much of the city is a slum, there are suburbs where there are tons of wealthy people, who could donate $50,000 each and barely feel a pinch. Thoughts and prayers are copouts for idiots. What Moore needs is money! $68,000 won’t even build one new hoe.
