WNBC Names Olabanji New Weekend Anchor

NBC-owned WNBC New York (DMA 1) today appointed two-time Edward R. Murrow Award-winning anchor Jummy Olabanji as the station’s new weekend evening anchor, leading the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts on Saturdays and Sundays. Olabanji will also provide general assignment coverage on weekdays. Her first day at WNBC will be April 26.

Olabanji joins WNBC from WJLA Washington, where she currently co-anchors Good Morning Washington and News at Noon. She previously was an anchor and reporter with WTKR Norfolk, Va., and at WCAV Charlottesville, Va. Olabanji began her career as a news assistant with CNN.

In addition to receiving two Edward R. Murrow Awards for breaking news anchor coverage, Olabanji has also been awarded two Virginia Associated Press Awards and three Capital Emmy® Awards, including for Best Morning Newscast.  

Olabanji is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. She earned a bachelor’s degree in communications studies from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She also earned a master’s degree in communication and leadership studies from Gonzaga University.
