FCC To Vote On ATSC 3.0 On Nov. 16

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai this afternoon confirmed that the agency will vote Nov. 16 on a proposal that would clear the way for broadcasters to use next-generation ATSC 3.0 technology. Details about the proposed regulations are not expected to be released until later this evening. But in a blog on the FCC’s website this afternoon (see here), Pai said the issue for the agency is whether to “allow television broadcasters to use Next Gen TV on a voluntary, market-driven basis. The bottom line is this: I want America to be at the forefront of innovation in the broadcast sector, the wireless sector, and every other sector of the communications industry.”

Whatever Sinclair tells them to do.

There are a lot of broadcast organizations other than Sinclair that are looking at ATSC 3.0 to insure continued viability into the future.

Without mandated ATSC 3.0 tuners in new TVs who will watch? Without those tuners on cell phones who will watch? Without government-funded converter boxes who will be able to watch? Even so, the (so-called) “broadcast” stations are not likely to really inform their viewers of the new standard for fears people will actually watch via antenna and the stations will lose retransmission fees. This is going to really be interesting to watch unfold…

I don’t want to replace my TV, but would willing to by a box to watch ATSC 3.0, if some one puts a signal in my area. As for loss revenue. How many cord cutters don’t care if they get local broadcasters, especially among the younger generation. Make it easy to get your signal and you might pick up some them as viewers. You won’t get them on Cable.
