Raycom Names Ingram Regional Group VP

Station group veteran Tim Ingram will oversee stations in Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas and Iowa in addition to continuing leading WVIE New Orleans.

Tim Ingram today was appointed regional group vice president for Raycom Media, a role in which he will oversee WTNZ Knoxville, Tenn.; KFVS-WQWQ Cape Girardeau, Mo.; KAIT Jonesboro, Ark.; and KYOU Ottumwa, Iowa-Kirksville, Mo. Ingram will also maintain his current position as VP-GM of WVUE New Orleans.

“From multiplatform content operations to station management, Tim has done it all. He has a comprehensive understanding of each facet of our industry and will provide strong leadership for the talented teams at these stations,” said Raycom Media President-CEO Pat LaPlatney.

In 2007, Ingram joined KAIT VP-GM. He was then promoted to VP-GM of KFVS-WQWQ.

Ingram’s career includes stops at WAVE Louisville, Ky., and KLTV Tyler, Texas, where he was director of operations and marketing.

“I started as a studio camera operator at KAIT over 25 years ago and have had the privilege of working across the Raycom Media footprint,” said Ingram. “I look forward to helping these four stations continue to build on their strengths and create new opportunities for our audiences and clients across all platforms.”

Ingram currently sits on the board of directors of the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters. He is a graduate of Arkansas State University.

Pat: what are you thinking? How does a guy in the top 50 market run a good station and still have time to oversee a number of other stations? If he’s that good bring in a station manager to run NO and let Tim oversee all of them!

Pat is thinking correctly. The headquarters based regional VP structure is a bureaucratic layer that gets in the way of effective station management and operations. The “we’re here to help gang” usually doesn’t.

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway has 365,000 employees. There are 29 people at corporate headquarters. Raycom (and other groups) need to dramatically reduce headquarters based corporate suits. Push decision making down to those who actually do the work and generate the revenue. Responsibility and authority works wonders for morale and results.

Raycom’s ownership is the Alabama Teachers Retirement System. They don’t care about the bloat of VP in Montgomery. I bet 25% of the Raycom’s stations EBITDA is eaten up by corporate over head.

So the General Managers at each of these stations will report to Tim and immediately take authority away from the General Manager. I am here to help you will turn into start doing it this way as we do this in NO so it has to work in Iowa. Corporate overload…..

What I’m saying here is the running a station in a Top 50 market with over 100 employees is a full time job. Nothing wrong with having a well experienced GM for those with lesser experience to turn too for advise… but not a GM with his own large station to run. Several regional VP’s with multi market experience and provide over site and not break the bank.

Check out Raycom’s website – “leadership” page. It’s similar to many other large groups – who commit the same self-inflicted wounds. GMs report to headquarters regional Exec. VPs. On top of that there are other headquarters Exec VPs in charge of news, sales, marketing/promotion, programming, research, etc. This structure effectively neuters station GMs. Even worse – it produces weak, timid, and ineffective department heads.
