Incident Response Training To Open CBR 2019

An incident response simulation exercise, designed to train security and IT leaders and staff members to react calmly and knowledgeably during a cyber attack, will kick off TVNewsCheck’s 2019 Cybersecurity for Broadcasters Retreat (CBR 2019), set for Feb. 20-21, 2019, in Orlando, Fla.

During the interactive exercise, CBR attendees will break into teams and roleplay their “company’s” CEO, CTO, CFO, CMO, chief information and security officer, chief legal officer and other managers as they react, in real time, to a simulated cyber attack.

As the clock ticks, the incident escalates and participants must make decisions about what to shut down; whether and how to pay ransom; when and how to communicate with employees; and when and how to respond to inquiries from the press.

“Participants will experience the pressure of reacting to an incident and trying to make decisions rapidly about how to deal with it,” says Sali Osman, a cybersecurity and risk strategy adviser who will conduct the exercise. “This is an excellent way to train security professionals to stay calm, anticipate issues and make decisions as competently as possible under the circumstances.”

As part of the exercise, team members will face a group of “stakeholders” — playing the roles of corporate executives and board members — who will evaluate how well each team responds to the attack.

Osman, who is an adviser to a number of corporate boards and is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors, has worked in cybersecurity for decades and has experience in the media, higher education, finance, government and energy sectors.

The incident response simulation is set for Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019, from 2 to 4 p.m. ET and will serve as the opening session of CBR 2019.

The retreat, in its second year, will take place at Hyatt Grand Cypress Hotel in Orlando, Fla. It is designed to gather security, IT and engineering executives, managers and professionals to network, engage in educational sessions and develop a set of industry best practices.

All attendees of the CBR must sign a confidentiality agreement to attend.
