ABC Owned Television Stations have taken top honors in TVNewsCheck’s second annual Social Media Excellence Awards, recognizing broadcasters’ exceptional innovation, creativity and audience engagement on Facebook.

The group won the Innovator Award, which honors the most remarkable achievement on the platform by an individual, news brand or station group, for the extraordinary work of its Localish unit across its stations.

KABC, the group’s Los Angeles station, is the recipient of 2019’s top award in the Large Market Category. The award recognizes KABC’s exceptional success in cultivating audience relationships through its Facebook efforts, particularly through its effective use of Facebook Groups to confront local issues like homelessness and its strong outreach on the platform to its substantial Hispanic viewership.

Gray Television-owned KKTV in Colorado Springs, Colo., is the recipient of this year’s award in the Small-Medium Market Category, recognized for its consistently well-executed engagement strategy.

Caroline Patrickis of Sinclair Broadcast Group-owned WJLA Washington has been recognized with the Media Talent Award for her extraordinary, engagingly produced videos profiling community heroes.

“We were enormously impressed with ABC Owned Television Stations’ work on Facebook this year, and Localish has been a standout effort,” said Kathy Haley, TVNewsCheck’s co-founder and publisher. “KABC, KKTV and Caroline Patrickis’ work all offer valuable lessons to the industry as it continues to look for the most effective ways to use social media as an optimal engagement tool with viewers.”

Winners were selected by a panel of judges from an initial pool of nominees culled from data partner Social News Desk’s live database of 12,000 local news Facebook pages. Social News Desk tracked 16 million posts by those pages and identified those with the highest engagement per post as nominees in the awards’ four categories.

The Social Media Excellence Awards will be presented at 4:45 p.m. on Dec. 16 at TVNewsCheck’s NewsTECHForum. After accepting their awards, the winners will discuss their strategic approaches to Facebook in a panel moderated by Kim Wilson, president and founder of Social News Desk.

Set for Dec. 16-17 at the New York Hilton, NewsTECHForum will bring together engineering, news, production and digital leaders to discuss excellence in news storytelling and news workflow.
