WCVB News Names Bill Sheerin Managing Editor

Hearst Television’s ABC affiliate WCVB Boston (DMA 9) has appointed Bill Sheerin managing editor of its NewsCenter 5. His appointment is effective immediately.

“Bill is a highly-regarded journalist with an exceptional track record of covering major local and national stories,” said Bill Fine, WCVB president-GM. “We’re confident that his proven management skills, as well as his ability to lead in a fast-paced news environment, will make him a great addition to the outstanding NewsCenter 5 team.”

“We are excited to welcome Bill to the NewsCenter 5 family as our new managing editor,” said Paige Harrison, WCVB news director. “Bill’s depth of experience and local knowledge make him the perfect fit for this position.”

Sheerin is an Emmy Award-winning journalist who comes to WCVB from WFXT Boston. This past year, he was honored with a National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Boston/New England Emmy Award for Continuous Breaking News coverage for a story on the Merrimack Valley gas explosions.

Sheerin has been the nightside assignment editor at WFXT since 2002 and has covered every major news event in the last 17 years, including the Boston Marathon bombings, the conviction and death of James “Whitey” Bulger, the Merrimack Valley gas explosions, major storms and weather events, and numerous major sports championships.

Sheerin began his career at WTVT Tampa during his senior year of college as an intern and was hired by that station as an assignment editor upon graduation.

Sheerin attended UMass Boston before transferring to the University of Tampa, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1998.
