Talkers were the ratings stars of the session ending September 12 with a bevy of the biggest shows in the group forging ahead, even though the frame began with the always-sluggish Labor Day Weekend.

At the head of the class, Live With Kelly and Ryan took the wraps off season 34 with a 6% spike from the week before to a 1.7 live plus same day national Nielsen rating. While most of the others will have their season premieres in the upcoming weeks, notable gainers included daytime dynamo Ellen DeGeneres, which rallied 14% to a 0.8, despite being in repeats on all five days, while warming up for its 19th and final season.

Ellen‘s launch went ballistic with a 40% year-to-year increase in the overnights on September 13. Also making major rating waves were Wendy Williams, whose host was recently hospitalized, which added 14% and the red hot Tamron Hall, which kicked off its third season with a 17% surge to a 0.7. Hall also chalked up the largest year-over-year increase of any talk show in the top 10, improving 17% from the same week last year.

Further back in the pack, Jerry Springer made a monster move of 100% to a 0.4, after its CW run ended and was replaced on some stations by the show’s syndicated version. Elsewhere in daytime, Judge Judy jumped 5% to a 4.6, and continued to rule the court shows, even with reruns all week. “Hot Bench” was the second-highest courtroom, climbing 7% to a 1.5. In access, overall chart-topper Family Feud led the games, inching up 2% to a 5.6. Wheel of Fortune fell 9% to a 4.1, tying the beleaguered Jeopardy, which was flat at 4.1.

The top talk shows for the week ending September 12, among women 25-54, were:

  • Live With Kelly And Ryan (0.7, +17% from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (0.5, unchanged)
