NewsNation Expanding Morning News Programming To Four Hours Each Weekday

Beginning June 27, the Nexstar cable network debuts Early Morning, a one-hour newscast hosted by Mitch Carr at 6 a.m. ET

NewsNation, Nexstar Media Inc.’s wholly-owned news and entertainment cable network reaching 75 million U.S. television households, will expand its live, national morning news programming with the premiere of Early Morning, a new one-hour cable newscast debuting Monday, June 27, at 6 a.m. ET.

Mitch Carr

Mitch Carr will anchor the broadcast and Emmy-nominated cable news veteran James Holm will serve as executive producer. Following the addition of Early Morning, NewsNation will offer a total of 86 hours of live national news, analysis, and talk every week — more than double the number of news hours on the network at its launch in September 2020.

“We are excited to have Mitch Carr kick-off our mornings with a fast-paced and informative news hour,” said Michael Corn, NewsNation’s president of news. “With James Holm leading the team, I’m confident Early Morning will resonate with viewers, as NewsNation continues its expansion to become a 24/7 cable news network.”

Following the Early Morning broadcast each day, Carr will join host Adrienne Bankert and team for Morning in America, NewsNation’s live national morning newscast airing weekdays from 7 to 10 a.m. ET.

Holm said: “Given Mitch’s passion for breaking news, Early Morning will bring viewers the stories they may have missed overnight and update them on the latest developments in ongoing stories from the previous day.”

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Holm most recently led news programming at the Black News Channel and previously was an executive producer at MSNBC. He began his career in radio in Fargo, N.D., where he was an executive producer for a nationally syndicated talk show.

Carr joins NewsNation from 12News in Phoenix, where he worked as a weekend anchor and reporter for three years. Prior to Phoenix, Carr covered the aftermath of Hurricane Florence for WRAL Raleigh, N.C. Previously, he worked as the sports director of WRIC in his hometown of Richmond, Va. A graduate of the University of Miami, Carr double majored in broadcast journalism and Spanish, and studied abroad in Mexico City and Viña del Mar, Chile. He is fluent in Spanish.

Here’s two things that need to be pointed out:

First, Nexstar is really going all-in on NewsNation despite the poor ratings. The latest Nielsen numbers show 46,000 viewers in primetime, and 87,000 total daily viewers. NewsNation was, and still is, billed as an alternative to biased cable news — which has at least five times the viewers. The audience is not there for NewsNation to justify growth.

But, to be fair, it takes time to grow an audience. Plus, Nexstar CEO Perry Sook LOVES NewsNation and the idea of having his own cable news channel, and the accompanying ad revenue that comes with it. In short, as long as Perry loves NewsNation, NewsNation will keep expanding — viewers or not.

Second, this Mark K. Miller bylined story is basically a copy-and-paste from the actual Nexstar press release. Compare for yourself: https://www.nexstar.tv/newsnation_expands_morning_news_programming_june27/. If TVNewsCheck is just going to run a company’s press release, why not be upfront and disclose this? “Provided by Nexstar” or something like that would be more honest than a byline that suggests Mark actually wrote this from scratch.

Former Producer is right – I will add that NewsNation is a quality product and at some point in the future they’ll be a bigger player. The company realizes the upside here is significant and is standing firmly behind it.
