Jordan Wertlieb Named Hearst TV EVP

The general manager of Hearst’s WBAL Baltimore Joins the group owner's corporate staff in New York.

Jordan Wertlieb, who since 2005 has been president-GM of WBAL, Hearst Television’s NBC affiliate in Baltimore (DMA 27), has been promoted to a new role as executive vice president of Hearst Television based at the company’s New York City headquarters.

The promotion was announced today by David J. Barrett, president-CEO of Hearst Television Inc. In his new role, Wertlieb will have management oversight responsibility for a portion of the 29 Hearst TV stations around the country, and will assist Barrett on various corporate matters. His successor at WBAL will be announced separately, the company said.

“Jordan has been an outstanding executive for Hearst Television in a variety of assignments over the past 17 years,” Barrett said.  “Most recently, as president and general manager of WBAL-TV, he has guided the station to enviable success in news, citizenship, sales and profitability and reputation. He has great passion, energy and enthusiasm for our company and our industry, and his business acumen and smart strategic insights — applied more broadly across our company — will help us address future challenges and the exciting next generation opportunities for our company and our industry.”

Wertlieb began his television career in 1986 as a research analyst at Katz Communications, the broadcast advertising sales representation firm, in New York. He became a television sales account executive at Katz in 1989, representing the TV stations of Hearst Broadcasting (a Hearst Television predecessor company) as well as other leading station groups.

In 1993, Wertlieb joined Hearst’s WCVB Boston as national sales manager and was promoted to local sales manager in 1998. In 1999, he was promoted to general sales manager of WBAL, and in 2005 became the station’s president and general manager, overseeing further growth in its revenue and news leadership.

Wertlieb currently serves as chairman of the Maryland-DC-Delaware Broadcasters board of directors and as vice chairman of the NBC Affiliate Board. He holds a BA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and is a graduate of the National Association of Broadcasters Broadcast Leadership Training Program.
