‘Electric Playground’ Offers Mobile Segment

The syndicated entertainment newsmagazine from Program Partners provides stations with a three-minute download that is automatically updated every day.

TV stations that air the weekly syndicated newsmagazine The Electric Playground can now download a three-minute segment from the show called The Rundown for their mobile platforms.

The show is distributed by Program Partners Inc., which struck a deal with Blue Wave Media to provide stations with the daily download.

“Our partner Blue Wave Media gives a station a piece of code that they embed one time on their local mobile app,” says Dave Hutchinson, SVP of program operations and digital media at PPI. “Once a station has this live link up and running, PPI and Blue Wave just refresh The Rundown content every day on Blue Wave’s server, which automatically updates The Rundown onto those participating station apps.”

The Electric Playground is an entertainment newsmagazine from Canada, with reporters in Canada and the U.S. It focuses on videogames, movies, TV and music. PPI sells stations two half-hour, back-to-back episodes in barter-only deals (4 local minutes, 3.5 national).

The show began airing as specials in 2010 and as a weekly show in fall 2011. PPI says it reaches 80% of U.S. homes through stations owned by Hearst, Gannett and other groups.

Starting this fall, a second, cash-only half-hour version of the show will begin airing as a Monday-to-Friday strip. PPI has so far sold this version to stations in about two dozen markets.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

“This is a first-run, day-and-date, all-original entertainment newsmagazine in HD that comes with apps and no restrictions on the content,” says PPI partner Ritch Colbert. TV stations can use content from The Electric Playground on their original programming, newscasts, websites and mobile platforms.
