Journal’s 1Q TV Revenue Climbs 7.5%

The gains included an 18% rise in core national advertising and a 28% boost in retrans revenue.

Journal Communications reported results for its first quarter ended March 25 included a 7.5% increase in revenue from television stations to $29.5 million compared to $27.5 million in the year-earlier period.

Political and issue advertising revenue was $1.2 million compared to $0.8 million.

Core local advertising revenue increased 2.6% primarily due to an increase in automotive advertising.

Core national advertising revenue increased 18.1% primarily due to increases in communications and financial advertising.

Retransmission revenue grew by 28% to $2.3 million from $1.8 million.

Operating earnings were $3.9 million compared to $3.8 million, an increase of 2.3%.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Television operating expenses increased 8.3% primarily due to increases in employee related costs and network fees.
