Tom Doerr Named WFLD News Director

Fox Stations moves the ND of its KRIV Houston to head up news at its Chicago O&O.

Fox O&O WFLD Chicago (DMA 3) today named Tom Doerr VP and news director. Starting Monday, Feb. 25, Doerr will be responsible for overseeing all editorial, business and administrative functions for WFLD, reporting directly to Dennis Welsh, the station’s VP-GM. He succeeds Phyllis Schwartz who left the station in December.

Most recently, Doerr was VP-news director of Fox’s KRIV Houston. Before that, he spent three years as VP-station manager of WFOR-WBFS Miami.

Earlier, Doerr was the news director of KTVT-KTXA Dallas and as the executive news director of KENS San Antonio.  Prior to this, he spent three years as a senior strategist for Audience Research and Development in Dallas, where he evaluated and provided guidance to local television stations on their news programs.

Doerr also was news director of WPLG  Miami, KTRK Houston, WJLA Washington and KTUL Tulsa, Okla. Earlier in his career, he was an executive producer for WSB Atlanta; an executive producer for WGAL Lancaster, Pa., and a producer for WHP Harrisburg, Pa.  He began his television news career as a reporter and producer at KGBT Harlingen, Texas.

A graduate of the University of Florida, Doerr holds a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in journalism.
