KELO To Launch 4 P.M. Online Newscast

Starting today, the CBS affiliate will broadcast an online-only newscast called First@4, a 15- to 30-minute program, depending on the amount of news during the day. The broadcast is available at the station's website, KELOLAND.com, and on its smartphone and tablet app.

KELO Sioux Falls, S.D., was the first station in its market to broadcast a noon newscast and now it’s the first to go live at 4 p.m.

Starting today, the CBS affiliate launches an online-only newscast called First@4, a 15- to 30-minute program, depending on the amount of news that day. The newscast is available at the station’s website, KELOLAND.com, and on its smartphone and tablet app.

KELO reporter Ben Dunsmoor will anchor the 4 p.m. show, which will include the day’s top news, including fully packaged stories, live reports from the field and a weather forecast.

Jay Huizenga, VP-GM of KELO, says the show is designed for people who are still at work and may not be able to catch the 5 p.m. newscast.

“We want to provide live news to all of our viewers, no matter where they are,” Huizenga says. “We tried to do something like this a few years ago, but nobody had broadband at the time. That’s not a problem today.”

Huizenga says the station is selling special advertising around the online-only show.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

KELO, which produces 27 hours of local news each week, redesigned its website in February and live streams all of its newscasts.
