Eugene Ramirez Joins WFLA As Morning Anchor

Media General-owned NBC affiliate WFLA Tampa, Fla. (DMA 13), has hired bilingual anchor/reporter Eugene “Gene” Ramirez. He will co-anchor WFLA’s weekday morning newscasts from 4:30 to 7 a.m. with fellow co-anchor Gayle Guyardo starting Jan. 26.

He comes to WFLA from WSVN Miami where he was a general assignment news reporter and regularly filled in on their features and entertainment show Deco Drive. He’s known for a wide range of reporting assignments, including complex court cases as well as general feature reporting.

Prior to joining WSVN, Ramirez also was a guest contributor to HLN Showbiz Tonight, CNN Newsroom, CNN en Español and Univision Radio. He also worked as a reporter and host of The Morning Show on WSFL Miami and was an anchor/reporter for Central Florida News 13 in Orlando.

He started his career at Spanish-language WTPH Ft. Myers, Fla.

Ramirez is a graduate of Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., with a BA in mass communications. His family comes from Cuba and he is fluent in Spanish.

Interesting they go so far out of the way to put emphasis on the bilingual aspect. Pairing him with another bilingual anchor (Gayle Guyardo) is the once dominate WFLA (who’s News Rank position is now closer to last) giving up and making a play for Hispanics?
