WBAL Ups Tim Tunison To News Director

Hearst promotes the Baltimore NBC affiliate’s assistant news director to the top news spot following Michelle Butt’s move to run WXII Winston-Salem, N.C.

Hearst Television’s NBC affiliate WBAL Baltimore (DMA 26) today named Tim Tunison news director, succeeding Michelle Butt, who was promoted to president-GM of Hearst’s NBC affiliate in Winston-Salem, N.C., WXII.

The appointment is effective immediately.

Tunison has been WBAL’s assistant news director since August 2005. During his tenure, the WBAL newsroom has earned many awards including a Peabody, duPont-Columbia, Cronkite, Murrow and multiple National Headliner Awards.

“Tim has done outstanding work for our station in various roles,” said Dan Joerres, President and General Manager of WBAL-TV. “His appreciation for localism, coupled with a commitment to investigative journalism, will enable us to continue to build upon WBAL-TV’s position as the leading news station in our viewing area.”

A native of Annapolis, Md., Tunison is a graduate of Ithaca College in New York. He currently serves as the treasurer of the Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association.
